On Thursday, Wataniya Telecom Maldives and Huawei has signed an agreement, to modernize the Radio Access Network of Wataniya. The project costing US$25 million involves upgrading Wataniya’s existing Radio Access Network with a state-of-the-art modern, advanced technology platform that will provide enhanced coverage across the country, and offer an enriched experience for voice, data and media services for its customers.

Under this project, testing of 4G services in Male’ city will also be enabled early 2013. Wataniya’s existing 3G+ network will be upgraded to the HSPA+ network, making this project a tremendous step ahead in technology for the country.

Wataniya customers will experience the most advanced global telecommunications solutions in the world, while also helping the environment – the new network infrastructure is significantly more environmentally friendly, consuming less power and less footprint than traditional equipment.

“This is a significant investment we have committed to for the Maldives, with the ultimate goal being to offer the most advanced, seamless mobile communications experience to our customers – once this project is completed, we will be catering to both existing and future mobile technologies including 4G.” said Haroon Shahul Hameed, Chief Executive Officer of Wataniya.
