While Maldives is a very small nation by size and population, the need and the demand for blood for different medical procedures and thalassaemia patients is quite high. Identifying donors has been a difficult task at many critical times of urgent blood requirements. Blood.mv, the Maldives blood donor database intends to connect blood donors and blood seekers such as the thalassaemia patients and ease the tension of acquiring blood.

Dr. Ibrahim Mustafa and developers at ShellTech solutions has built a data base of Maldivian blood donors as a non-profit initiative. The SMS component of the services is provided by Dhiraagu as part of its corporate social responsibility. Blood.mv is now the official Blood Donation and Blood seeking service of the Government of Maldives and is maintained by Ministry of Health. Lintel Investments and Maldivian Thalassaemia Societyare the other stake holders of this service.

Signing of MOU between Dhiraagu, MoH and ShellTech Solutions and the Official Launch of Blood.mv

Registration to the blood donor data base is currently provided by sending an SMS to the service. Alternatively Blood seekers may also send a request for blood via SMS specifying blood group and location. The request is immediately broadcasted to the phone numbers of 10 donors from the database matching the required criteria and also shared on blood.mv social accounts at Facebook and Twitter.

Details for subscribing as a donor and requesting for blood is available on Blood.mv website.

Wataniya Telecom Maldives is currently undergoing testing phase in implementing the blood.mv service to its customers.
